 A Home In The "Twalet"
Spade and neutered, the Raffin live in a Bathroom. Above; a few peering out from one of the coveted spots, the sink. The shower has ramps, hide boxes, ropes and branches giving them sleeping quarters and a jungle gym. Timothy Hay, refreshed daily and replaced weekly, is used as their bedding material. They like to snack on it occasionally and it's soft nature is perfect for lounging material.
What's A Raffin?Debbie "The Rat Lady" Ducommon founder of The Rat Fan Club coined this name for Rats. You'll have to ask her for the history. We know we like it better than the traditional name "ratties" as it sounds a little softer and more in tune with the sweet nature of Rats. Twenty five Raffin make their home here at The Sanctuary. Some come from various Shelters. Eleven came from a group of small Animals being kept by a homeless person who was camping out in an abandoned house. When Public Housing Officials went in to clean things up, they found several little beings in less than humane conditions. Along with the Raffin, a Dwarf Hamster, Eric and three little Mice, Einie Meanie and Minie were brought from this situation to the Sanctuary.
Mighty MiceLiving in a two floor cage, these boys are to young to be neutered. They were born to a pregnant Mouse Lady who came to us through a Shelter. When old enough, they will be neutered, and will join the ladies. Here they head for their wheel which they will run on together, making it turn at least a thousand miles an hour. No kidding! Well maybe we're exagerating a little.
Ladies Of The Mouse FamilyThe Women of the Mouse Family love their wheel too! They also delight in building nests in their hide boxes and in the Timothy Hay that makes up their bedding. They and the Rats also get a bit of felt to use in their nests, a fabric without strings that they could get their feet tied up in. They live in cages with mesh small enough to prevent escapes. It is not appropriate to keep them acquariums as most pet stores do, because acquariums do not provide enough ventilation for them.
They are out of their nests here because it's dinner time! The Rats and Mice all get the diet Debbie Ducommon created to insure that they stay healthy. Aren't they just the cutest little boos?
