Animal Care Spay & Neuter

Our Recent Discoveries
We recently have had two pregnant females join our family. We were also brought four orphaned babies. These experiences are the inspiration for this article. Breeding Rabbits can lead to tragedy.

Rabbits have been bred for specific characteristics that serve agricultural and pet trade needs. Rabbits have not been bred for longevity and overall good health.

After giving birth to eight babies, Magic and her daughters were separated from her three sons when the children were seven weeks old to avert new pregnancies. When they reached three and a half months, they were all spayed. Two weeks passed and they were placed into cages in the room that holds the majority of the general population. The cages were used so that they could acclimate to their new extended family. As far as we could tell, they were all in good health.

This was a stressful event for the girls, and within one week, all five girls began sneezing. Why? Rabbits are thought to carry various harmful diseases which lay dormant unless their immune systems are taxed. Despite ample fresh foods to boost their immune systems, the stress of the move was more than their immune systems could tolerate easily. Though four of the girls have responded to antibiotic treatment successfully, one did not. She passed away within one week.

We have heard of many other situations that are examples of breeding practices that are not centered on creating healthy Animals. Malformed gastronomical tracts can lead to sudden death caused by blockages regardless of high fiber diets. Mallaclusions, teeth that are not lined up properly, and so need to be clipped, lead to sinus and eye problems. These are two other issues that have arisen out of the breeding of Rabbits without health being a primary goal.

These problems are not ones that can be averted by careful breeding. They are issues that are hidden. Sometimes they may not affect one generation at all, and will show up later in subsequent generations.

And the orphans that were brought to us? All died despite our best efforts

Spaying neutering Rabbits becomes even more important in light of our recent experiences. If one wants the experience of raising baby Rabbits, trust that local shelters will inevitably have a pregnant female on hand that can be fostered.

Thanks for caring about the Animals in your life!
