Petco - The Place Where Pets Die

Just Say No!
At this point we see a boycott as the only reasonable measure to take. As mentioned in the previous page, we do see alternatives. If the store does not sell any animals, we will be willing to do adoptions through the local store. Although this would mean breaking away from the national boycott, we believe that the opportunity to end cruelty through example is far to important to ignore. Given what we have seen at the location, this does not seem likely.

In the meantime, we have asked Humane Societies and Rescue Organizations in our county to join us. We included printed versions of web pages linked to on these pages. You can read our letter to them here. We have also written a letter to local veterinarians informing them of the Petco corporate policy to pay for veterinarian care for an animal purchased by a customer. This letter can be read here. You will need Adobe Acrobat to view these letters.

We ask all those concerned with the welfare of animals to join the boycott. Furthermore, let Petco know you are doing so. Encourage your friends and the Animal Welfare organizations you support to join the Boycott. As always, we are either part of the solution, or part of the problem.

Write to Petco, please do not email them. In our other campaigns we have learned that unless thousands of emails are sent on the same day, emails are easily ignored. Instead, take a few minutes and send them off something via snail mail. Let it be as simple or as intense as you feel necessary. The basic info to give them is "Until Petco stops selling animals, I will boycott Petco and will encourage others to do the same." Letters should be sent to

Once the store opens the opportunity to argue with the management will exists. This gets us almost no where. What we can do is professionally examine the realities. Mellisa Kaplan has prepared an excellent Pet Store Evaluation for Herps. Avian Welfare Resource Center has created another Pet Store Evaluation form for birds. Note your findings systematically. If you note abusive conditions, call law enforcement officials. In San Luis Obispo, Animal Services, a county agency, can be reached at 781-4400. Know the laws. You'll find them Here. You will probably know them better than law enforcement officers. For instance, California Regulations clearly state that Pet Stores must;

(3) Provide adequate nutrition for, and humane care and treatment of, all pet animals under his care and control.

This means that animals cannot be sold before the age of weaning. How old do the animals appear to be? Proper nutrition mean mother's milk for animals until the appropriate age of weaning.

Another part of the code states;

(4) Take reasonable care to release for sale, trade or adoption only those pet animals which are free of diseases or injuries.

This means that pine shavings are unacceptable bedding. It is known to cause disease. All pet stores argue this. Hand them the following list of scientific literature proving your point, Scientific Literature. Additionally, the pet stores own trade magazines, have published articles about the danger of using pine shavings. Debbie Ducommun of the Rat Fan Club wrote an article published in Pet Business as recently as March of 2002.

Not much will be done. At first. But if we keep on, eventually the "the meek shall rule..."
