When paid spokespersons and researchers say that genetically altered foods are safe, THEY LIE.
Stop the Insanity An Editorial and Education Material Resource
The 2004 Presidential Election in the U.S. brought to light many un-foreseen, though suspected, realities of the state of our society. Regardless of our personal belief systems, and therefore whether we felt supported by the results of the election or not, it is apparent the strong polarization of the people is an issue that must be addressed.
Locally that polarization played out in several ballot races and measures. One of those measures is one that must be addressed.
Measure Q sought to ban genetically altered foods crops in San Luis Obispo County. The main media, KSBY, (an NBC affiliate) and The Tribune, both showed extreme bias against the measure. There was an incredible lack of fair reporting on this issue. When Kind Planet attempted to place an ad supporting Measure Q, we were told there was no available space. Their stand does not make the issue go away. Nor does the fact that the measure lost. The battle will go on. Perhaps a meeting of the minds will be sought and created. Perhaps not. In any case, we would ask that people become educated regarding genetically altered foods and crops.
We are not going to give you resources that are pro use of these crops and foods. Monsanto (corporation), which is making big bucks spreading their science experiment regarding genetically altered foods across our nations farmlands, has plenty of money to throw around to spread their propaganda. We just don't feel like giving them the benefits of our work, time and energy. If you want pro genetic altered crop information, please seek out publications from your local Farm Bureau, which has bought into the propaganda, and we use the word "bought" decisively.
Before any of us buy into the safety of genetically altered foods, let us take the following into consideration.
- The lifespan of ladybugs was reduced to half when they ate aphids that fed on
genetically altered potatoes in Scotland Hawkes, N. London Times, 10/22/97*
- 44% of monarch butterfly larvae died within four days when fed milkweed, (their
exclusive food), dusted with pollen from genetically altered corn. Losey, J. Nature, 1999
- Rats fed bioengineered potatoes showed evidence of significant effects on organ development, body metabolism and immune function. Pusztai, A. Report of Project Coordinator Rowett Research Institute 10/22/98
- A GA version of the supplement, L-tryptophan was released for sale to the public. After the release, at least 1500 people in the US alone suffered in an outbreak of Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome (EMS).. Love, L., Journal of Clinical Investigation, 1993
Some of the pioneers in scientific research initiated to determine the safety of ga foods are Dr. Arpad Pusztai, Dr. S. Bardocz, and Dr. S.W.B. Ewen. We offer here two of their works that offer important documentation in the quest to become educated about the safety of the current products generated by this scientific experimentation.
The latter of the two works listed above includes references to the teams other GM papers as well as works by other researchers.
If you're ready to begin the work to stop this science experiment in our fields, you can do so locally. Here in San Luis Obispo County, connect with SLO GE Free. Nationally, Earth Island, Greenpeace and Earth Save have taken on this issue. We highly recommend getting involved in grassroots efforts wherever possible.
