Earth Matters
A small motorhome was recently donated to Kind Planet. At first sight it seemed the perfect vehicle to use for educational purposes. The interior is much like a small home and could easily be transformed into a home for humans and animals. It is very easy to imagine children walking through, learning how to care for house rabbits and guinea pigs, Iguanas and rats. However, like most motor homes, it uses a lot of gas.

How could we justify adding to pollution and the demand for limited resources while claiming to teach others about kindness?
As is the case with all we do, others have traveled the path before us. Through the knowledge they have gained, we have found a solution.

Through our search for an alternative to gasoline, we found www.veggievan.org

Here is the beginning of the story as told by the founder of veggievan.org, Joshua Tickell;

"In the summer of 1997 I poured a bucket of biodiesel fuel I made from Long John Silver's fast food frying oil into the tank of my 1986 Winnebago motor home, cranked the engine and headed west. Little did I know that what was about to happen would alter the course of my life and, in turn, the lives of many people. I began the official '1997 Veggie Van USA Tour' at The New College of Florida in Sarasota and ended it at the Real Goods Solar Living Center in Hopland, California."
Through our research, we have found that the most available earth friendly fuel alternative is biodiesel fuel. Made from vegetable oils, the fuel can be used in any unmodified diesel engine and is low in emissions. We can't say we are ready to start using this alternative fuel. The motor homes' engine will have to be replaced with a diesel engine first. Additionally, the interior still needs reconstruction. It is good to know that there is viable alternative that we can adopt. For more info about biodiesel, see www.veggievan.org and www.biodiesel.org.
