Travel Tips - Camping With Companion Animals

Camping With Companion Animals
Though inappropriate for other species, Camping can be great fun for a Dog, kind of like a long walk. There are some restrictions at most campgrounds that do accept Dogs and special dangers for Dogs out in the great outdoors. Here are some things you'll want to consider and do before you go on your adventure.

The first thing to check on is policy of the Campground you're planning to stay at in regards to Animals. Some do have special restrictions and/or fees.

Most require that Dogs be on a leash that is no longer than six feet. Supposing that Spot is leash trained, make sure your leash fits the requirement.

It is very dangerous to leave a Dog by itself at a campsite. People and other Animals strolling by pose special hazards without the security of your fenced in yard. Plan on spending all of your time with your companion. Even then, remember there may be wild things out there that your Dog has never been exposed to, who pocess the ability to cause harm such as porcupines, snakes, and any number of crawly things.

If you are planning on doing a lot of hiking, make sure your Dog is ready for it. Even though the idea of a half day trek through mountain trails may sound good, if you're Dog is not used to this much activity, you may be disappointed. Imagine finding yourself cutting your activity short and carrying the more willfull personality types back to the campsite.

Most campgrounds do not allow Dogs to spend the night outside. This means you'll need a crate for sleeping.

Some camprounds use a well for their water. If you are bringing water for yourself for drinking, bring enough for your Dog too, as well and spring water sometimes has contaminates in it. New water, water from a source other than home, can allways cause stomach upset.

In that Camping usually means a long car ride to your campgrounds, you may want to check out Travel Tips which will help you plan for the ride, and our printable Travel Checklist will help you organize for the great adventure. Have a great time out in the great outdoors, and say Hi for us to any Cottontails you spot!
