Of Many Feathers - Birds of The Sanctuary

White BoysThese are the four White Boys who came together. All Roosters. We are lots of Roosters. People get Roosters for Easter and then they find out that they are illegal to keep in the city and so off they go to the shelters. Then they come here if they are lucky.

Gilda There are allways nice places in the shade for the Chickens to hang out in during the day. Or they can scratch in the dirt for good things. They are so busy with all there is to do. Sometimes some of the women stay in the birdroom to lay eggs. Gilda came here with Henny who was a Rooster. She still hangs out with him. Here she's busy looking in the Bird room for food. She probably won't find any. Then she'll go outside. We're so busy.
Right now there are eleven Roosters and twelve Hens. But Pluto and Eros live with Five Hens and Kyle and Osborne share three Hens. So the White Boys and Reginald have no women.

KyleThis is a picture of Kyle before he had Women to share. It was after he lived with Ida. Ida was very sick and had to live in the Iso room. She had cancer and could not walk very well. Kyle stayed next to her to keep her company until she left the Planet. He was very sad when she left. He recovered after some time. Here he is crowing to tell all the other Roosters how big he is. He came to a Shelter because the people who had him before said he wasn't getting along with other Roosters. He has learned to get along with all the Roosters here though. Sometimes it takes time. Sometimes they have to beat each other up a few times. Then we have to nurse them and make sure they don't get an infection. No one has ever hurt anyone to badly. It only takes one or two fights for them to understand that fighting isn't going to get them anywhere. The only problem is the time it takes to take care of them after their squabbles. That's part of saving their lives though.

Tina Tina the Emu does not live with us at all. Sometimes she comes into the Bird Room during the day. Usually she is with the Dogs or the Goat. She and Sequoia worry the human and go for long walks in the hills. She also chases cars and greets all incoming humans. At night she sleeps in her own room next to Elvis the Goat. So she and Elvis have become good friends too.
Someday there will be more Emus here because there are many who were bought and bred by farmers who htought they were going to make a lot of money selling Emu meat. Not many people want to eat Emus. So now the people are trying to find homes for them. One was even running arund a nearby town recently. Tina is happy without any other Emus, and she'll be even happier when more get here. She and Sequoia will take them for walks because Emus like to walk. They like to play in the sprinklers too.
