Of Many Feathers - Birds of The Sanctuary

So Many Of Us!
Who would think that so many Birds of so many different feathers would find their way to an Animal shelter? How do we all get there? And then as if by magic we are here. And together we live. Well most of us at least. The Doves and Lovebirds live in the Aviary in the house. And Tina is a world unto herself. In the Bird room in the barn, we sleep and eat. And in the yard and orchard, along the creek and in the pool we play. There are skirmishes occasionally, though usually among Birds of the same feather. And though some will venture out and become friends with a different species, we stay amongst our own kind at night and tell our stories. During the day we are very busy. Some of us have never lived outside of a cage before. Here, where we are free, we find so many pastimes of delight. We steal each others eggs. We chase insects. We scratch the ground finding so many yummy things. Some of us clean ourselves in the dirt and some of us swim in the pool or the creek. We argue with the Dogs and the Pigs.

Mr. Toodles We stay out of the Donkeys way. They are awfully big. We've met a few of the Rabbits, but for the most part they live seperately from us. We are living very full lives. We dream of the day when all Birds live in such freedom. No more cages we say! No more tortures! Oh we know some of the Birds that live inside human homes as companions like their cages. That is different. It is the Chickens that live in small places that we worry for. The Turkeys who are sacrificed for the human feasts. The Geese whose very feathers are plucked from their bodies. Those we pray for. Let them all come here! We wonder if the human here will allow that?
We digress. You are here to learn of us. And to know us, you must understand our world both here and beyond, so we will stay with our immediate tales.

Here is Mr. Toodles, the patriarch of the Turkey family. He watches over all of us. Isn't he magnificantly a Turkey? Next are the women of the Turkeys. They love to steal the eggs of the Ducks and Geese and sit on them. Eventually one will steal the eggs her sister is sitting on and eat it. And then new eggs must be found.

The women of the Turkey familyThe Turkeys came here from the Shelter. Before that they lived on a farm with the Sheep. Some human thought they wanted to be a farmer. But when the work was to much, the human left. And so the Shelter people had to go and pick them up. The Geese came from other Shelters, all abandoned or surrendered. There are four Geese. They spend a lot of time in the creek. They like to swim. They are very loud when they call out warnings, which they do a lot.

The GeeseThough today we speak with one voice, we are far from one. We are seven different kinds of Birds and many different colors. We are ground Birds and Flying Birds. We are all domesticated and except for the Turkeys none of us come from this part of the Planet. Are You ready to meet the rest of the Birds? Good, because they are ready to meet you!
