Conversion Strategies
In order to convert your "seed junkie" to a healthy diet, it is best to come up with a plan of attack, rather then just diving right in. All diet changes need to be done gradually for the birds health. Stress can cause a bird to go off feed, which certainly isn’t going to help their nutritional needs. So gather your patience, and check your resources and begin the process that may actually give your bird a longer, healthier life. When changing your diet, always be aware of how much the bird is eating, and monitor the weight of the bird throughout the conversion period. Your bird should lose no more then 10-20% of their body weight. As an aid, try using conversion products like LAFEEBER’S AVI-CAKES or NUTRI-BERRIES. These items can introduce a combination of seeds and newer items in a "formed" food, allowing your bird to feel different things, and not just selectively search for familiar items. Birds are cautious on unfamiliar things, so make it as pleasant as possible for them. Enjoy the food with them.
Suggestions:
Mix pellets with seed. Your bird may not eat the pellets right away, but in an effort
to get to the seed, they will have to get around the pellets, allowing them to become familiar
with the feel and the texture.
"Eat" with your bird. If they see you enjoying the food, they may try it more readily.
Offer two meals a day. Birds usually eat in the early morning and at dusk, so introducing
new foods when they are hungry and ready to eat may encourage a bit of adventure on their part.
Conversion may go rapidly, or it may take a long time. Again, be patient and know that the benefits will be well worth it.
