About Us - We Are Humane Educators

We Are Humane Educators
Kind Planet was founded in 1997 at The Sanctuary, our home for abandoned animals. Our purpose is to increase the inherent compassion of humanity towards all life. We do not believe that it is enough to show compassion to animals if one is not showing compassion towards the planet, each others or ourselves. We therefore strive to provide information to the public regarding many aspects of life. Our offerings include information regarding bio diversity, sustainable living, eradicating hate, ending domestic violence and creating inner peace.
Our Shelter and Philosophies
Our animal care guidelines, and many of our fostering guidelines were adopted from those created by the House Rabbit Society. Though we are not members of HRS, nor affiliated with it in any manner, we have great respect for their work to enhance the quality of rabbit care. We have adopted this approach to all of the species we care for. We have sought out information so that we can enhance the lives of the animals in our family, their dignity honored, their innate characteristics celebrated.

Kind Planet operates a "New Life" Shelter. The term "New Life" came from Dan Knapp, then director of Sonoma County Humane Society. We model our policies regarding animal care and outreach after those of the Marin Humane Society. Marin Humane is one of the nations largest shelters. Founded in 1907, MHS now offers hope to nearly eight thousand animals each year. Marin Humane has successfully ended overpopulation of cats and dogs in Marin County. Though private rescue and an educated citizenry has played an important role in this accomplishment, Marin Humane’s educational outreach and adoption policies have made an end to overpopulation a reality in their community. MHS now accepts animals from many other locations. Perhaps Marin will someday be the first community to end suffering caused by inadequate care for animals other than cats and dogs who are considered companion animals. MHS certainly has the ability to educate the public towards that end, and has created some of the first truly humane adoption programs for rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, etc.

Kind Planet does not operate a "No-Kill" Shelter. We do not believe that such is possible at this time. Each time we agree to take in an animal, we make a choice to leave another behind, death sentence intact. San Francisco’s SPCA, (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), has claimed to have created a model for establishing a "No Kill" city. That organization claims that all "adoptable" animals in that city are now guaranteed a life. To fully understand the realities of this "no kill" zone, one must look carefully at the agreement with San Francisco’s Animal Control agency which led to the claim that the goal to create a no kill city has been fulfilled. A distinction is made between adoptable, treatable, non-rehabilitatable animals. The SF SPCA does place all "adoptable" cats and dogs. It does not place all "treatable" animals. As explained to us by Commissioner Carl Friedman, Director of San Francisco’s Animal Control, "treatable" cats and dogs include animals that are flea infested. The no kill accomplishment does not apply to species other than cats or dogs.

Until no animal cared for as a domestic pet is allowed to breed unless a permanent life time home is guaranteed for all offspring, over population will be a reality. Until humans accept full responsibility for the animals they call pets, giving them humane care for life, overpopulation will be a reality. Until then, "no kill" remains a dream.

Additionally, we have to make tough choices regarding the care we give to the animals we call family. We cannot always justify spending hundreds of dollars on single animals when so many are homeless. Though we do provide high quality medical care through SLO County’s most qualified exotic Veterinarians, we can not guarantee that our budget will always allow us to do this. Should we decide to euthanize rather than treat an animal, we would disqualify ourselves as no kill if we were operating under such a banner.

Though it is no longer possible for us to do so, Kind Planet's staff spent one year volunteering on a daily basis at our local shelter. It is our local shelters that deal with the issues facing our communities regarding animals. The staff and volunteers in Animal Control facilities are the true hero's of animals. Their lives are the greatest examples of kindness we know of. Kind Planet salutes those individuals willing to be on the front lines.

We hope that through our work, others will learn through our mistakes as well as our accomplishments. With each act of kindness we participate in, with each act of kindness we inspire, we hope to be adding a bit of compassion to the consciousness of humankind.
